SOBER SURVIVAL TOOLS

So if today was your first day at staying sober, what tools do you think you will need?

Here are a few suggestions and tools that we use in the freedom room.

Remember to change your routine.

If you come home and open a drink straight from work, maybe go to the gym from work instead for a while.

Go for a walk.

Talk to your support circle.

Journaling. This is an excellent tool in recovery. Make a road map of how you wish your new alcohol life to be.

A vision board, similar to journaling, but cut out pictures and see your potential.

Find your new favourite non-alcoholic drink.

Try an alcohol-free alternative beer or wine. ( Pls note that if you are an alcoholic like me, if the drink has only 0.05% alcohol, your body will still find it) I only really recommended this idea for clients that are sober curious or want a healthier relationship with alcohol.

Go to an AA meeting, in person or on zoom.

Use a sober tracker, track the days that you are alcohol-free.

Read recovery books and listen to podcasts. (plenty I can recommend and suggest) Just ask.

Think the drink through. If you have a drink, what could the consequence be? Where would that drink take you to? Will the hangover be worth it?

Accountability, if you have that drink, who will you have to tell? So tell a friend, a partner, a coach that you intend to go sober free.

Write out a timetable and keep busy, don’t allow any time for boredom.
