Delirium Tremens, aka The DT’s.

Alcohol use and abuse is a widespread issue and is the most used and arguably most problematic. Unfortunately, when alcoholism begins, it puts individuals at risk for withdrawal problems like delirium tremens.

The DTs, put frankly, is a severe form of alcohol withdrawal. It can lead to several life-threatening symptoms and can prove deadly. In fact, up to a quarter of the people who deal with delirium tremens die from the symptom.

Let us look closer at the problems that can occur from this severe form of withdrawal.

When I used to get the DT’s after a heavy night, I couldn’t stop my hands from shaking. I was unable to make a sandwich, hold a cup of tea, spread toast. My hands would shake uncontrollable, and the only way to stop it was by having a drink of alcohol. It didn’t matter what time it was in the morning. I needed that drink to stop my hands so I could function.

Once delirium tremens begins, the individual will likely deal with several different symptoms, ranging from uncomfortable to dangerous to life-threatening. Some of the more minor signs include:

  • Excitement or fear
  • Fatigue
  • Light sensitivity

Some of the more dangerous symptoms include:

  • Shaking
  • Severe confusion
  • Chest pain
  • Fever and nausea
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures

Unfortunately for those who are dealing with alcoholism (AUD, alcohol use disorder), delirium tremens is a distinct possibility. When treating DTs, the primary goals are to decrease the risk of seizures and mortality. To do this, patients usually are set up in a clinical setting with near-constant supervision. In some instances, they will be given medications like benzodiazepines to help fight against specific withdrawal symptoms.

There is no quick fix for curing the DTs. Because of this, medical staff will instead work to manage symptoms, ensure patient safety, and keep an eye on them until the most dangerous symptoms pass.

The best way to avoid the issue of DTs entirely is to stop drinking. For those who have a problem with alcohol, this is more easily said than done; however, The Freedom Room can help those who are struggling.

Alcohol treatment programs such as The Freedom Room and support meetings like AA are effective in helping people recover.

Overall, delirium tremens is a dangerous and challenging thing to deal with. To give yourself the best chance at avoiding the problem entirely, it is best to look at ways to reduce or cut out drinking completely. For many who are at risk of the problem, this means seeking out professional help.
